The ABFA Women’s League 2023 kicked off with a bang on Saturday, 30th September, 2023. National youth and senior players took the spotlight for their respective teams.
In the opening game, Trendsetters and Wadadli United squared off in the first of a triple-header. Abigail Donalds opened the scoring for Wadadli in the 17′. Benna Girls forward, Gabrielle De Suza, doubled the lead in the 21′ from the penalty spot after Kanika Buckley was brought down in the penalty area.
The running Waddadli team would put the game to bed with both Donalds and De Suza adding one more each for a comfortable win in the first match.
Fort Road, one of the league favorites, showed up against a promising All Saints United in the second encounter. Iressiea Allen, National U14 forward, also tipped as “one for the future” led her team to a comfortable win against All Saints.
Allen got the ball rolling in the 18′ and completed the first-half hat-trick of the tournament in minutes 28 and 34. Not being left out, senior Benna Girls midfielder, Kai Jacobs, added her name to the scoresheet in the 38’.
Substitute Danesia Wilson, entered the game in the 25’, and an immediate impact was made just two minutes later as she extended the lead to her name on the scoresheet to make it 5-0. Allen added her fourth of the evening in the 49’ to finish off the scoring at 6-0 in favour of Fort Road.
