All Saints League’s return welcomed

The absence of a once anticipated pre-season league for footballers near and far had placed a damper effect on the vibrant community of All Saints Village.

This year the league would make its return with the high expectations of years before where local superstars and local Legends of the game were made.

League organizers Lemuel Ralph, Nick Fenton, and Wayne Phillip made it their business to give the community what they were longing for. The return of the country’s most exciting league would finally make its return.

Twelve (12) teams, separated into two groups of six (6)are currently vying to be named All Saints League champions 2024. Group A consists of Old Stagers, Police, Young Warriors, Stoneville, and All Saints United. Group B consists of El Hombre, 5 Star Kitchen, Strike Force, Fundamentals, and Yorkshire.

The league is played nightly with double headers starting from 6 pm and is heavily supported by the scores of supporters who come to see good football and have a bite to eat from the neighboring hot spot, Sideview Bar and Grill, famously known as Tasha’s Bar and not forgetting the satisfying of one’s sweet tooth at Melts Ice Cream, the home of the rolled ice cream, where you can customize your ice cream to your liking.

The league is sponsored by Sideview Bar and Grill, Melts, Football Profile 268, All Saints United FC, Hon. Jamale Pringle, Cut Master Lawn Care, MVS Machine Shop and LD Distributors

Grenades name training squad ahead of the Club Shield Championships

The former ABFA Premier Division Champions, Grenades FC would have had time to lick their wounds and recover from an unexpected ending of the 2023/24  premiere league season.

Their chances of a repeat championship were dashed in the final two weeks of the competition, allowing All Saints Utd and coach Schyan Jeffers to lift their first premier division title.

After some months, Grenades would have had time to see where things went wrong and fix the pieces that needed to be fixed, in whatever department that may be.

Upon the release of the training squad, there was a notable absentee to the coaching staff, as it seems that Grenades would seek to return former coach Derrick “Pretty Boy” Edwards to lead the team into familiar territory and ultimately part ways with coach Lenny Hewlett.

The men from round south will do battle against Guyanese powerhouse Guyana Defense Force FC in the preliminary stages of the competition on July 26th at the Rignaal Jean Francisca Stadium in Curacao, 5:30 pm local time.

The competition will be using a Knock-out format, therefore, Grenades must win to move on to the next round of the competition. A total of three wins will see them play in the finals set for August 4th, 2024.

The dominance of the champions

The nation’s top flight league kicked off on November 25th 2023, Grenades were poised to start their championship defence after winning the nation’s top prize for the first time in the team’s existence in the 2022/23 season.

Always a presence in the domestic and international market, they brought back a bulk of the previous squad with a few new faces to fill the void of the ones that parted ways with the club. This also included the backroom staff.

Grenades Coach, Lenny Hewlett

New coach Lenny Hewlett  was appointed after the departure of coaches Donovan Peart and Christopher Harvey near the ending of the previous season.

Since his appointment, the master of his trade are five (5) games unbeaten, 5W 0D 0L,  scoring twenty (20) goals, averaging four (4) goals per game and only conceding three (3) times. Boasting a plus 17 goal difference.

Leading the goal scoring charts for the in-form team is  27 year old Leaus Henville of Saint Lucia with four (4) goals, following him closely are fellow St.Lucians Ridel Stanislas and Sherman Augustin, both on three (3) goals each.

Grenades leading goals scorer Leaus Henville

The team looks menacing on the pitch and are dismantling teams in their way, nothing short of what a defending championship team is suppose to do. The pressure from the fans and non-fans doesn’t look to bother the team as they display brute force whenever they play.

Quinton GriffithThe premier league is surely being used as preparation for the Caribbean Club Championships, where the real pressure awaits in  April of this year.

Grenades’ attack is complimented by the experience of  St. Lucian centre-back Kurt Francis, Benna Boys captain and 2022/23 ABFA premier league Player of the Year, Quinton Griffith and Golden Glove winner 2022/23 Brent Parker.

Brent Parker – Goal keeper

A well oiled team with a clear mission that looks certain but they still have to be wary of the likes of All Saints United, Old Road and Villa Lions, all clapping on the heels of the champions and allowing them no room for error.

You can follow Grenades games right here, fixtures and scores.

ABFA Transfer window is now OPEN

According to the rules and regulations governing the ABFA leagues for the 2023/24 season, the transfer window, which allows clubs to add to their roster, whether it be domestic or international players, is open as of January 1st 2024 and closes at midnight on January 31st 2024.

The premier league competition, started one the 25th of November 2023, saw the exclusion of Tryum FC from the league. Although still appearing on the fixture, Tryum FC are yet to feature in the top flight this season.

The exclusion of Tryum (PREMIER LEAGUE)and Cedar Grove Blue Jays (FIRST DIVISION), up to this day, remains a mystery, leaving it up to speculations and questions unanswered regarding the teams. The non-participation of both clubs left a host of players without a club to call their home for the season, until now.

The window will allow those players to find clubs and allow “unhappy” players to find “greener pastures” or more frequent playing time. What ever the reason maybe for a move, rest assured that transfers will be made, the office of the FA will be buzzing and teller lines long with persons waiting to pay transfer fees.

Transfers are to be sent via the FIFA Connect system, from club to club, then accompanied by a physical transfer form, signed by the player in question along with a bank receipt of the correct amount for the desired transfer.

NO transfer will or shall be complete without the signed form from the player and bank receipt.

Young Benna Girls Shine yet Again in CFU Girls’ Challenge Series

Antigua & Barbuda 5   vs   0   Barbados

St. Johns, ANTIGUA        22nd  August, 2023 – Days after playing to a draw, host Antigua & Barbuda faced Barbados for again in Tief II Group A playin the 2023 edition of the CFU Challenge Series Girl u14. But that’s were the similarities end as the host produced a sensational performance to blank their opponent 5-0

With Keitonya Skepple coming off scoring four goals the day before, the young forward was again leading the line and her forceful running resulted in her being brought down illegally in the penalty area early in the match.  Iressiea Allen converted the kick from the spot to give her team a 10 minute lead. Skepple almost doubled her teams lead six minutes later, but a break save from Ukayla Dallaway smother the in rushing forward.

Skepple was again causing Barbados some discomfort, high pressing first the win a corner kick for her team and illisiting a save from Dallaway in the short corner.  It was that second corner that resulted in the host being awarded a second penalty kick, this time for a handball in the area.  Karmiella Hughes did the honours in 22’ sending her spot kick to the left of Dallaway into the roof of the net.

The Benna Girls were truly flying and Skepple joined in on the fun.  Out muscling both center backs, the hosts’ leading goal scorer added to her tally unleashing a powerful right footed shot to lift her team to a 3 goal lead at the break.

Chasing the game now and needing a goal to get back into the contest Barbados rang in changes at the start of the second stanza and committed bodies forward in an attempt to get on the scoreboard.  Gabrielle Birmingham had the Trudebts best chance in the 40’ but saw her effort float agonizingly over the crossbar.

Things were about to get worse for Barbados, being reduced to 10 players after skipper Taryn Sutherland committed her second bookable offense in the 50’.   Salt was rubbed in the proverbial wound as Skepple’s ensuing free kick was turned in by a Bajan defender to make it 4-0 to the host.

Substitute Anesa Liburd should have added to the total moments after coming on in the 60’, but her effort after an Allen cross was saved by Dallaway.  Latoya Williams got her name on the scoresheet three minutes from time with a firmly struck shot to make it another five goal game for Antigua & Barbuda.

Benna Girls Grab BIG win in CFU U14 Challenge Series

Antigua & Barbuda 6- 0 Bonaire

St. Johns, Antigua. (21st August, 2023)

A goal haul by forward Keitonya Skepple led host Antigua & Barbuda to a huge win over Bonaire in Group B Tier II action in the CFU Challenge Series U14 Girls.  Playing at the ABFA Technical Center, the host romped to a 6-0 triumph over the Dutch counterparts.

With speedy winger Rolesha Humphreys out of the starting lineup, it was left to Skepple to lead the line and lead the line she did.  The powerful forward was on the score sheet as early as the 11 minute as she raced onto a defense splitting pass by Aliyah London to send a firmly struck right footed shot past Rudzayrima Dorothea in goal.

Bonaire mounted an almost immediate response through Genisha Piar Cornelia with two shots in quick succession, the second of which required a diving save by Serenity Colborne to preserve her team’s lead.  The lead was doubled soon after courtesy of an own goal.  A Nafisa Quashie crossing the 21st minute, took a deflection to wrong foot Dorothea and give the host a two goal advantage. With Quashie pulling the strings in midfield a third goal was always on the cards and it came seven minutes later.  Quashie played Skepple through with a well placed and well weighted ball and the forward’s well placed left-footed effort nestled in the bottom right hand corner.

Despite the scoreline, the girls from the ABC Islands managed to muster some decent foreys in their opponent’s half.  Cornelia and Geraldine Alberto tried to push their markers back, carving out a decent half chance for Charlotte van Loo , but a timely intervention by skipper Denovis Jarvis thwarted Bonaire’s best chance of the half.  Skepple almost added to her tally in first half stoppage time but lifted her effort over the crossbar moments before the interval.  The halftime whistle came soon after to the relief of Bonaire, the host enjoying a 3 goal cushion.

Antigua & Barbuda came flying out of the gates on resumption and Quashie was rewarded for her industry in the 36’.  After some slick build up, the diminutive player saw her initial shot carom off the upright, but made no mistake with the rebound putting the host nation four goals to the good. Skepple completed her hattrick four minutes later in the 40’ after Iressiea Allen picked her out with a cross to the back post.

Meanwhile, Bonaire continued to plug away and the introduction of trio, Latoya Willems, Q’sheantely Martines and Eleesha den Boef briefly stymied the Benny Girls’ offensive.  That reprisal was short lived however, as Skepple capped off her scoring with her best effort of the match. Collecting calmly just inside the penalty area, she skillfully chip substitute goalkeeper Simone Sint Jago making 6-0 to the host.

Bonaire, commendably, continued to search for a consolation goal and Alberto forced her way between both center backs but Colborne was well positioned to preserve the clean sheet.   It was 6-0 at the end of regulation, taking Antigua & Barbuda to 4 points, level with Bonaire and still with a possibility of advancing to the knockout stage.

Benna Girls Get First Point against Barbados

St. Johns, ANTIGUA        19th August, 2023

It was honours even at ABFA Technical Center between host Antigua & Barbuda and Barbados on match day 2 of the CFU Challenge Series u14 Girls. Playing in the final match of the day, the teams battled to a 1-1 draw.

Antigua & Barbuda coming off of a two goal loss in their opening match looked to turn their fortunes around by coming out on the offensive. Their determination was rewarded as early as the 2nd minute of play through a Nadia’s Quashie conversion.  Pacey winger Rolesha Humphrey was brought down just outside the penalty area and the diminutive forward got onto the end of a well delivered cross by Aliyah London.

The host continued to attack Barbados in wide areas with purposeful running by Humphrey and Keitonya Skepple. Barbados looked to stem the tide through enterprising play by Jadae’ Lorde and Janiyah Nurse in midfield.  It was Nurse who got the first attempt on goal for her team, with only a spectacular save from Alyssa Laviscount denying the equalizer from close range in the 14’.  Antigua & Barbuda could have extended their lead a few minutes later but the final pass was out of reach of Quasie after some good build up play by Antigua & Barbuda.

The equalizer did come for Barbados not too long after. Laviscount got her finger tips to a teasing cross from the left side but could only manage to put the ball into the path of Lorde who made no mistake in scoring her second goal in as many matches.  The response was almost immediate from the host and it was Humphreys again causing Barbados some nerves, but her shot from close range went wide. Both teams went into the break tied at one goal each.

On resumption, Barbados looked to carry the attack to Antigua & Barbuda and Laviscount was called into action to keep Barbados at bay, twice picking off dangerous crosses early in the second half. The introduction of Iressiea Allen brought some energy to the host and she came close to restoring her team’s advantage in the 48’, but her lobbed attempt went narrowly over the crossbar, much to the relief of the Bajan contingent. Allen continued to use her pace and skill to try to unsettle the Bajan defense looking to combine with Quashie and Humphreys while Skepple continued to battle in wide areas, unfortunately a few half chances failed to materialize.

Lorde thought she had given her team the win 3 minutes from the end of the match when she skillfully created some space at the top of the penalty area but shot straight to substitute custodian Serenity Colbourne.  Four added minutes provided the opportunity for the host to grab the winner but Allen had her shot inside the penalty area charged down, some dogged defending by Barbados to snuff out the goal scoring chance.

As the dust settled on match day 2, a point took Barbados 4 points and top of the Group B in Tier II, while Antigua & Barbuda got off the mark.
