Young Benna Girls Shine yet Again in CFU Girls’ Challenge Series

Antigua & Barbuda 5   vs   0   Barbados

St. Johns, ANTIGUA        22nd  August, 2023 – Days after playing to a draw, host Antigua & Barbuda faced Barbados for again in Tief II Group A playin the 2023 edition of the CFU Challenge Series Girl u14. But that’s were the similarities end as the host produced a sensational performance to blank their opponent 5-0

With Keitonya Skepple coming off scoring four goals the day before, the young forward was again leading the line and her forceful running resulted in her being brought down illegally in the penalty area early in the match.  Iressiea Allen converted the kick from the spot to give her team a 10 minute lead. Skepple almost doubled her teams lead six minutes later, but a break save from Ukayla Dallaway smother the in rushing forward.

Skepple was again causing Barbados some discomfort, high pressing first the win a corner kick for her team and illisiting a save from Dallaway in the short corner.  It was that second corner that resulted in the host being awarded a second penalty kick, this time for a handball in the area.  Karmiella Hughes did the honours in 22’ sending her spot kick to the left of Dallaway into the roof of the net.

The Benna Girls were truly flying and Skepple joined in on the fun.  Out muscling both center backs, the hosts’ leading goal scorer added to her tally unleashing a powerful right footed shot to lift her team to a 3 goal lead at the break.

Chasing the game now and needing a goal to get back into the contest Barbados rang in changes at the start of the second stanza and committed bodies forward in an attempt to get on the scoreboard.  Gabrielle Birmingham had the Trudebts best chance in the 40’ but saw her effort float agonizingly over the crossbar.

Things were about to get worse for Barbados, being reduced to 10 players after skipper Taryn Sutherland committed her second bookable offense in the 50’.   Salt was rubbed in the proverbial wound as Skepple’s ensuing free kick was turned in by a Bajan defender to make it 4-0 to the host.

Substitute Anesa Liburd should have added to the total moments after coming on in the 60’, but her effort after an Allen cross was saved by Dallaway.  Latoya Williams got her name on the scoresheet three minutes from time with a firmly struck shot to make it another five goal game for Antigua & Barbuda.
